What this measure does
The proposal would have Parliament congratulate its Speaker, Pangalian M. Balindong, on receiving a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from Manuel L. Filed on 2 July 2024 by MP Eddie M. Alih and 41 other principal authors, Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim among them, with 44 co-authors. It was adopted as Resolution No. 471 on 15 July 2024.
Why it was proposed
The Speaker earned his Bachelor in Political Science in 1962 and his Bachelor of Laws in 1966 from the same university. The proposal credits him as one of the most influential figures in the quest for peace in Mindanao and an advocate of 'peaceful pluralism' on the Moro Problem, a stance it traces through his service in the 1973 Constitutional Convention, as Deputy Speaker in Congress, as Speaker of the ARMM, as a member of the Consultative Committee reviewing the 1987 Constitution, and as Speaker of the Bangsamoro Parliament. It calls him a 'Revolutionary Democrat'.
