What a committee does

Three things happen to a bill in committee.

01. Referral

A bill is read into the record on first reading and referred to the committee whose subject it falls under. The referral decides who does the studying.

02. Study and public hearings

The committee reads the bill in detail, calls agencies and affected groups, and holds hearings. This is where public input carries the most weight.

03. Committee report

The committee reports the bill back — as filed, amended, or substituted. A bill never reported out simply stops here, which is what happens to most.

Coverage

Known gaps in this dataset

80 members of the roster hold at least one of the 905seats recorded here. Membership is read from each committee’s own page, so it is current as of capture and nothing more.

Sources: committee pages and committee reports, fetched 2026-08-15

  1. 01

Committee pages list the current membership only. A member who sat on a committee in an earlier parliament and has since moved off it leaves no trace here.

  2. 02

Reports are captured as they appear in Parliament’s reports table — number, title, date, and the committee that filed them. The text of each report has not been read.

  3. 03

Parliament tags reports with a committee taxonomy that has drifted from the committee pages: a few terms are older names or misspellings. Terms that could not be matched to a committee leave their reports unattached rather than guess.

  4. 04

Referred bills and resolutions come from each committee’s own page, which lists titles rather than measure numbers, so not every referral can be linked to its entry in this registry.

  5. 05

Hearing schedules and attendance live in the session journals, which have not been captured.

This is a reading aid, not a legal source.

Summaries, sector tags, and status explanations here are written from the titles and metadata Parliament publishes, with human review — they are here to help you find a measure, not to cite one. Read the official document before quoting it, and where the registry is incomplete the category page says so.
